September 1-7, 2013: Settling in for the school year in Panajachel

The girls and I arrive in Panajachel on September 1st (winter/rainy season) to no water in the house once again.  Right now water is working most of the time, but it's this color:
We feel our first earthquake the night of September 6th--just a little ground-shaking and glass door-rattling here: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/usb000jkmw#summary
Amanda is color-coordinated with the hammock.

Amanda and I have tortillas and fresh guacamole for lunch every day while Ava is in school.  There is also a carefully-guarded lychee for dessert.

On September 7th, we accompany John, Juan, and families to the mountains to help fertilize Juan's family's corn and to have a picnic.

Mario carries a huge load of firewood down a steep, slippery path.
Some of the women wash their muddy shoes
and feet by the roadside.

Leandra gets a ride from Ava.

Heading back down to John's new pickup truck for the return to San Jorge and Panajachel

Lui takes a turn with the firewood.

Ava can't resist Juan David's smile.

Amanda waits in the picop while the onion price is negotiated.

Our internet is finally installed!

We finish a long day with dinner and a movie at the Hurtado house.
