November 1-4, 2013: El Día de los Muertos

We take a long-weekend trip to Mexico for visa renewal and Day of the Dead observations.

Amanda enjoys a breakfast burrito on the comfortable bus.

We walk the streets of San Cristóbal de las Casas with the Hurtados.

Chapulines (grasshoppers) are sold from large buckets on the streets.

Manny enjoys his chapulines with lime.

Pan de muerto (Day of the Dead bread)

Amanda discovers that the huge lollipop she just bought is actually jicama.

Manuel makes sure it doesn't go to waste.

Ava enjoys hours of shopping.

An altar set up on the sidewalk

Table of Day of the Dead offerings, including fruit and Coke

Church in San Juan Chamula

We visit a cemetery with its Day of the Dead decorations.

Women wear traditional heavy wool skirts.

The flor de muerto, or marigold, is used to decorate the graves.

We eat amazing soup at El Caldero: chilango (chicken tortilla soup) above and tlalpeño (chicken and vegetable soup) below.

Chihuahuas dress for the cool, rainy weather.

Grilled chicken, chilaquiles, beans, and guacamole help me recover from an intestinal virus:)

Calaveras de azúcar, sugar skulls, are for sale.

We are back after 10 hours on the bus.
